Discover the Answers to Your Yachting Questions

Below are some of the most often asked questions I get about yachting.  It is also important to acknowledge that getting into yachting can be intimidating.  While most boaters are great folks, there are unfortunately some trolls out there who will shame people new to the hobby.  We are here to demystify the hobby and give you the language to be confident in joining the yachting community.

No, in fact they are often easier to operate than small single engine boats due to wide set twin screws that allow for operation very much like a skid steer tractor.

Of course, it depends on your experiencing in operating equipment; however, I could easily get someone with no experience up to basic operations in a morning.  After that, it just takes practice.

This depends on what you want to do with your yacht.  Do you want to just hang out on the water?  Do you want to fish?  Do you want to do both?  Are you looking for long distance cruising?

All of these are a factor in what you may want.  If you are all about fishing, but you still want to have luxury, you are probably looking for a sport fish.

If you want to hand out on the water and want a sporty looking boat?  Probably a express or sedan bridge type yacht.

Long distance cruising with a full-beam owners state room?  An aft cabin motor yacht or trawler may be your choice.

Yes, but we can help you bring those costs down dramatically.  For instance, I have the invoice from my boat’s previous owner and he was charged nearly $6,000 for annual maintenance.  With a few hours of time, I do the same tasks for about $1,200.

Often, people new to yachting ask this question and are shamed by seasoned boaters or brokers who say, “If you have to ask, you cannot afford it!”  This is a non-sense answer.  Boats are ‘always going up hill’ because they have to move the water out of the way.  Our yacht burns around 1.25 gallons of fuel per mile at cruise (16-17 knots).  Depending on the hull design (full displacement, semi-displacement, or planing) you can find options that are more efficient.

Absolutely!  There are few things you need a boat yard for, but the majority of maintenance is pretty easy.  We have a bunch of how-to videos to articles to help.

With modern chart plotters navigation has become pretty easy.  What is more important is trip planning.  Knowing the weather and the underwater terrain you are planning to traverse is the key to success.  There are many apps that can help with this and interface with your boats chartplotter.

Of course, you should absolutely take a USCG boaters safety course before hitting the water.
